Tooth extraction in Stamford Hill, London
What is a tooth extraction treatment?
We understand having a tooth out can be a stressful time. We aim to try and save your tooth through restorative work, however, if removal is the only option, we do our best to make it comfortable.
Tooth extraction procedures are a lot less painful due to the sedatives and anaesthetics available. In many cases, patients experience little to no discomfort and only minor bleeding.
Before the treatment begins, we ensure the area of the tooth extraction is completely numb. The actual procedure is simple and doesn’t take too long. The aftercare is what’s most important, including rest and gentle care of the extraction site. Patients may need to take an antibiotic and keep the area clean to avoid future infections.
Smoking, vigorous brushing, rinsing, and drinking liquids through straws are discouraged during the post-operative period because they hinder healing and may cause the wound to open.
Why are tooth extractions used?
The most common reason for tooth extraction is removing seriously damaged teeth due to tooth decay, a fractured or broken tooth. It may also be necessary to reduce dental crowding, the risk of infection and in the case of preparing for a denture.
What are wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth typically emerge after the age of 17. They’re the last of the large grinding teeth at the back of your mouth to come through. Some people never develop wisdom teeth and others have up to four.
Often, wisdom teeth cause no issues, however, sometimes, there’s not enough space left in the mouth for them to come through. This is described as ‘impacted’. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling, infection or damage to the teeth next to them. If the gum around the wisdom tooth is swollen, the jaw may become stiff and sore.
If you have problems such as infection, cysts or tumours, tooth decay or gum disease around a wisdom tooth, you should consider extraction.
