Dental hygiene in Stamford Hill, London
What is a dental hygiene treatment?
Caring for your teeth and oral health should be a priority. The best way to reduce decay and gum disease is to practice regular dental hygiene and attend dentist check-up appointments. This is called ‘preventative dentistry’, which means catching any potential issues before they develop, reducing the amount of treatment – avoiding more extensive treatments. Caring for your teeth avoids serious problems and aids in a healthy and confident smile.
What does an appointment with the dental hygienist include?
Removal of calculus (tartar)
Calculus is a type of plaque, that hardens over time and harbours bacteria. It is caused by the continual accumulation of minerals from saliva and becomes firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can be threatening to gum health – and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
Elimination of plaque
Plaque is almost invisible and a sticky film, formed on the teeth. It can grow with a colony of saliva, food debris and bacteria. This bacteria produces toxins which can inflame the gums – and be the start of periodontal disease. During your appointment, the hygienist will remove this plaque.
Teeth Polishing
After removal of the plaque, teeth polishing takes place. This removes the stain and plaque which isn’t already removed during teeth brushing and scaling.
